Understanding the AI Ethical Dilemma

Artificial intelligence is, by nature, neutral. It’s a tool — much like a hammer or a pen. Yet, when AI systems make decisions, they can inadvertently perpetuate biases, influence opinions, and even threaten privacy.

Key Ethical Concerns in AI

  1. Bias and Discrimination: If an AI is trained on biased data, it can perpetuate and even amplify existing prejudices. This has been observed in areas like recruitment, loan approvals, and facial recognition technology.
  2. Transparency and Explainability: “Black box” AI systems, which don’t reveal how they come to specific conclusions, pose challenges in understanding and accountability.
  3. Privacy and Surveillance: AI tools, especially in conjunction with big data, can be used to track, analyze, and predict individual behaviors, leading to concerns about privacy invasion.
